Description

Secluded from the eyes of anyone but family members, Muslim women live under a system of tradition, rites, and rituals that favor men above women. "A man loves first his son, then his camel, and then his wife," says an Arab proverb.

Phil and Julie Parshall understand the issues, heartaches and dangers facing Muslim women today, having lived among them for more than four decades. They bring a sensitive perspective to this thoughtful, yet sobering book that examines the controversy of female circumcision and proof of virginity, the heartache of arranged marriages, divorce, polygamy, and the status of women living in a male dominated world. This book will not provide you with easy answers but will prompt you to begin praying for these "daughters of Ishmael," and give you sensitive awareness to life behind the veil.

Endorsements

"Phil and Julie Parshall have provided us with an excellent overview of the world of Muslim women.

The Parshalls have spent long years in the Muslim communities of Bangladesh and the Philippines. Phil has interacted with Muslims from other countries and he has studied Islam in great depth. Their varied experiences come alive in these very readable accounts. But this book moves beyond interesting stories to give instruction on the position of women according to the Hadith and the interactions between the prophet Mohammed and his wives.

[The authors want] the reader "to understand the Muslim woman in a more loving and prayerful manner" and "to actively engage in witness" to such women. Lifting the Veil certainly provides the material to accomplish this purpose. It offers a good start for exploring each issue more fully."

Author Bio

Dr. Phil and Julie Parshall began their mission service in a Muslim community in Bangladesh. Here they settled down for twenty years, borrowing and lending cups of sugar, observing weddings, family quarrels, and funerals, having their own baby, and finding their baby-sitters from among their neighbors. Now Phil and Julie are ministering among 30,000 Muslims in a Manila slum.
